Kelims und Andere Flachgewebe aus der Sammlung Neiriz presents the remarkable private collection of antique kilims and other flatweaves assembled by Hamid S. Neiriz. Published to accompany the first public exhibition of the collection, the book showcases exceptional examples from Anatolia, the Transcaucasus and Persia. Featuring 190 textiles from the Neiriz Collection, including village, tribal and nomadic flatweaves, the catalogue brings together many previously unpublished and rarely seen examples of outstanding quality. Spanning a wide range of regional weaving traditions, several pieces are considered among the finest of their type, offering a fascinating insight into the artistry, diversity and cultural significance of historic flat-woven textiles. Text is presented in both German and English.
About the Author
Hamid Sadighi Neiriz is a Berlin-based artist, collector and dealer specialising in Persian and Central Asian textiles. His lifelong engagement with the artistic and cultural significance of woven traditions led him to assemble a remarkable collection of antique kilims and flat-weaves. In 1980, he founded Gallery Neiriz in Berlin together with Karin and Robin Hawkes, which grew into one of the city’s leading galleries for non-European art. His collection has been exhibited internationally, including in the 1998/99 exhibition Das Bauhaus webt, which brought nomadic weavings into direct dialogue with Bauhaus design for the first time. Karin Hawkes is a specialist in Persian and tribal weaving traditions. In 1980, she co-founded Gallery Neiriz in Berlin, where she worked alongside Hamid Sadighi Neiriz to promote the study and appreciation of historic textiles. She has co-authored several publications on Near Eastern weaving and has contributed to a deeper understanding of the design, technique and cultural context of kilims and other flat-weaves.
