From January 2020 the Oriental Rug and Textile Society (ORTS) will be delighted to welcome members and guests to their new venue at the University Women's Club behind the Dorchester Hotel in Audley Square in London’s Mayfair. In the meantime, the ORTS Autumn Lecture Series contains three talks shedding light on antique rugs and textiles at their present venue at St James Piccadilly in London.

Chasing Tensions: A lifelong pursuit of an understanding of stitch and textile
Anne Morrell, born Anne Butler in Chennai (Madras) India, is a Professor of Textiles and former Head of Embroidery at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her own embroidery work has been exhibited in various museums and galleries and touring shows on four continents.
She has published extensively in the field of embroidery, and currently alongside her work as a consultant at the Calico Museum of Textiles, Sarabhai Foundation, India.

Malay Gold Thread Embroidery
Fiona Kerlogue has recently retired from her post as Deputy Keeper of Anthropology at the Horniman Museum, London, where she was responsible for the Asian anthropology collections. She is now working with the Naprstek Museum (National Museum) in Prague and is also a specialist adviser for the National Trust.
Fiona was previously on the staff of the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Hull where she took her doctorate. Her thesis was based on the textiles of Jambi in Sumatra. She has also done field research on the textiles of Gujarat, Cambodia, Thailand and several of the islands of Indonesia. She has also taught on the textiles, art and cultures of Southeast Asia, and lectured in the US, Malaysia, India, Indonesia, Siberia and several European countries.
Major publications include ‘The Arts of Southeast Asia’ in the Thames and Hudson World of Art series; ‘Batik: Design, Style and History’ and most recently ‘Collecting Experience in the 1930s: Indonesian and Pacific Collections of Ruzena Charlotta Urbanova in the National Museum’.

Asian Textiles for the Portuguese Market: trade and taste (16th-18th centuries)
This talk will focus on the textile trade between Asia and Portugal in the early modern period. It will analyse the main circuits and further examine the nature of Asian textile imports in Portugal, assessing their impact on consumption patterns and shifts in taste.
Maria João Ferreira is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Lisbon at CHAM, the Center of Humanities (one of the research centres of Lisbon University) where she is examining the use of textiles in Portugal during the period of the House of Braganza between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Her PhD research focused on the same time frame, analysing the presence and use of Chinese textiles as decorative options in Portuguese sacred celebratory events.
All ORTS Talks are held at the St. James Conference Room, 197 Piccadilly W1J 9LL London.
The Conference Room entrance is within the corner of Church Place and Piccadilly at a wrought iron gate signed ‘Church Hall Conference Room’ leading down iron stairs below street level. Doors open from 6.00pm. Drinks and snacks are served. Both Green Park and Piccadilly tube stations are a short walk away. Free parking in St James Square and Jermyn Street after 6.30 PM.
Non-members welcome to attend for £7 a single lecture, students £5.
