Bearing Witness: Embroidery as History in Post Apartheid South Africa, 7 September – 7 December 2014 is one of three exhibitions held as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations at the Fowler Museum in Los Angeles, CA. The focus is embroidery as a way to express views. Produced since the demise of apartheid by two community groups; The Mapula Embroidery Project in Wintervelt outside Pretoria and Kaross Workers in Limpopo, the pictorial textile works depict historical events and personal experience in colourful stitches. Covering such diverse subjects as HIV/AIDS, public health, gender roles and Nelson Mandela’s 85th birthday, the lyrical, engaging tableaux illustrate engaging narratives- continuing in the great tradition of textile art.
