Nazmiyal Antique Rug Collection at Bonhams, New York, 4 April 2016

Jason Nazmiyal is one of the mainstays of the antique decorative carpet market in the USA. The Nazmiyal Collection  is one of the few showrooms in New York’s  traditional rug district around East 32nd Street that still focuses exclusively on antique weavings.

While many businesses in the neighbourhood have become involved in new production, Nazmiyal has remained true to the antique rugs for which he maintains the same passion as when he first set up in business back in 1980. On 4 April at Bonhams New York saleroom at 580 Madison Avenue, 167 antique and vintage carpets from the Nazmiyal Collection will be offered in an auction entitled An exemplary decorative antique and vintage carpet collection by Nazmiyal.

The offering covers the range of material that one might hope to find with a leading Manhattan dealer, but there are also some unexpected surprises for collectors such as a 17th century Kerman Vase carpet (lot 1120), a reasonably priced Mughal shrub carpet fragment (lot 1116) as well as a number of Caucasian rugs and suzanis. In many cases the estimates have been kept relatively accessible, perhaps most notably on a well-known white-ground Ziegler carpet that was once in the study of Sigmund Freud’s house in Hamsptead (lot 1150, estimate £56-80,000).
