    Sotheby’s 22 May auction of the Arts of the American West realised almost $4 million. This was the first Sotheby’s sale to bring together the best examples of American Indian artistic traditions as well as Western paintings and works on paper spanning 2,000 years of cultural and aesthetic traditions.

  4. Rugs at the Dorotheum, Linz and Vienna, May Sales

    The Dorotheum in Vienna, one of the oldest of Europe’s leading auction rooms, holds regular Spring and Autumn sales of Oriental carpets, textiles and tapestries under the expertise of Wolfgang Matschek, and carpets are also included in less specialised sales both in Vienna and in the company’s provincial salerooms in cities such as Linz. This Spring, a Linz sale on 16 May 2013 includes a small group of rugs, while Herr Matschek’s main sale at the Palais Dorotheum on Monday 27 May, offers more than 200 lots.

    In HALI 175, on page 136, the image of a yellow-ground Northeast Caucasian prayer rug, sold at Grogan’s in Dedham in January 2013, mistakenly accompanies the details and comment for an unusual Talish prayer rug sold by Rippon Boswell in Wiesbaden in November 2012. Here are both rugs with the correct captions and comments.
