One activity of interest on Dealer's Row at the Indianapolis ACOR was at the small 'booth' run by California collectors Charles Lave and Bethany Mendenhall. They were working on behalf of the ongoing fund-raising effort for the proposed Anatolian village and nomadic cultural centre in Istanbul, which will incorporate the collection of kilims, textiles and ethnographic objects, as well as the vast archive of photographs, donated by Josephine Powell.
Interested parties could watch a video interview with the indomitable collector/photographer, peruse an album of colour photos of some of Ms Powell's kilims and grain bags, each with a price tag for preservation (washing, mounting and in some cases minor repair), select one they liked, and then donate the money to fix that piece. Donors even get to keep the picture, and in due course an 'after' picture will be sent to them, while the item in question will be labelled 'Repair donated by ...'. The appeal managed to raise about $6,500 (some 25 pieces) and it is hoped will generate create some momentum.
