Berlin's Museum für Islamische Kunst is the venue for this year's Volkmanntreffen, which will focus on 'Carpets from Transylvania'. The event starts on Friday 27 October with an evening at the museum, followed by a weekend of typically well-researched lectures. The accompanying exhibition of 'Ottoman Rugs from Saxon Parishes in Transylvania 15th-18th centuries' is planned for 28 October 2006–7 January 2007. This will, with the help of Stefano Ionescu, feature some carpets published in his book Antique Ottoman Rugs in Transylvania (HALI 139, pp.55-57), including a loan of approximately 24 rugs from the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu, Romania (right), alongside the MIK's own rugs. See http://www.volkmanntreffen.defor further information.

There will be a second exhibition to visit at the MIK during the Volkmanntreffen weekend entitled 'The Jazira - a radiant cultural landscape between the Euphrates and the Tigris', containing objects from the David Collection. This runs from 3 October 2006 - 29 July 2007.

The 28th annual Turkmentreffen will take place in Hamburg on 13 - 15 October 2006. A programme of lectures, and a Show & Tell focusing on Tekke main carpets will be enhanced by a corresponding exhibition at Galerie Azadi. The show will include a wide range of early, rare and exceptional Tekke main carpets from collections in Lower Saxony, Hamburg and the northern Germany and will be on until 7 January 2007. Galerie Tehrani will also hold an exhibition of Turkmen rugs in its premises over the weekend, adding to the Turkmen theme in Hamburg.
