12 August 2005 Joshua Lumley, formerly head of the Oriental and European Rugs and Carpets department at Sotheby's, Olympia, will be holding the first of his own rug exhibitions near his home in Kent, England, in October 2005.
Joshua started in the rug business in 1993 working for Bonhams as an assistant in the carpet department. In 1996 he moved on to Phillips, where he re-established the carpet department and eventually became head in 1999. Joshua then went on to work at Sotheby's Olympia until 2004, when he opted for a career change and moved out of London.
The two day selling exhibition will include over one hundred antique rugs, runners, kilims, trappings and carpets. The focus of the show will be on individual tribal and village rugs, runners and carpets with good vegetable colours. Joshua tells us that prices will be as low as possible to encourage new buyers and collectors.
The exhibition will take place in an 18th century Oast House, traditionally used for drying hops in the production of beer, located in a farm on the outskirts of a small village in Kent in a beautiful area of countryside only sixty miles from London. Viewing will by appointment only so please contact Joshua to arrange a meeting. All visitors will be welcomed with a glass of local beer and are sure to find some interesting pieces.
The event is to coincide with the launch of his website www.joshualumley.com, where the exhibition will be shown online from 1 October 2005.
