28 September 2001: Now well under way, the carpet conference in Morocco will be remembered above all for the outstanding special exhibitions of the country's weaving traditions. At the Musée de Marrakesh, 'Beauté Sauvage' (Wild Beauty), a show of carpets from private collections curated by Gebhart Blazek, is described by HALI editor Danny Shaffer as 'The best exhibition of Moroccan carpets anytime, anywhere'.
Two exhibitions focusing on textiles, both curated by Jurg Rageth, have aroused equal excitement among the many aficionados enjoying the hospitality and culture of Morocco over the next days. 'We are seeing Moroccan textile art at the very highest level' said Markus Voigt.
At the opening ceremony Professor Wilfried Stanzer and Gerhard Schafhauser were honoured by the Moroccan government. In recognition of their work in developing Moroccan handicrafts through the Amassine weaving project, they were awarded 'Le grade d'officier du Wissam al Alaoui' - one of the country's highest honours.
